长期从事植物系统发生重建和生物地理学方面的研究,即利用多学科的手段,探究植物类群的起源、分化和现代地理格局及其成因。主要包括:1)利用基因、基因组、形态学以及生物地理学等证据探讨被子植物大类群的系统发生和进化;2)利用进化发育生物学手段,通过研究性状相关基因与植物系统发生之间的关系,探讨关键创新性状的进化;3)综合进化与分布数据,从时间和空间维度探究植物区系的演化历史、多样性格局及其成因及生物多样性保护策略。迄今共发表论著300余篇(部),其中在Nature、Nature Plants、PNAS、Molecular Biology and Evolution、New Phytologist、Cladistics等SCI收录期刊发表论文200余篇。2005年获云南省自然科学一等奖1项(本人排名第二),2015年享受国务院政府特殊津贴,发表在Nature的研究成果入选2018年度“中国生命科学十大进展”,“十三五”国家科技成就展,2019年中国科学院科学发展报告和2022年中国基础研究发展报告。
