长期从事植物分类学和生物地理学研究，主要研究类群为樟目和檀香目，目前为“中国生物物种名录”植物名录负责人。研究在Nature，Current Biology，Molecular Phylogenetics and Evolution，Journal of Systematics and Evolution，Botanical Journal of the Linnean Society等期刊发表论文20余篇，出版专著8部。
