主要研究方向是生命之树重建与应用。一方面，综合基因、基因组、形态、地理分布和化石等证据，对生命之树上的重要类群开展分类学和生物地理学研究，以揭示植物演化的普遍规律；另一方面，利用大尺度生命之树，探究植物区系的起源、演化与多样性形成机制，为生物多样性保护实践提供科学支撑。以第一或通讯作者（含共同）在Nature、Nature Plants、Nature Communications、National Science Review、Current Biology、New Phytologist等期刊发表论文40余篇，研究成果（Lu et al., 2018. Nature）入选2018年度“中国生命科学十大进展”。先后获中国科协青年人才托举工程、中国科学院青年创新促进会和国家优秀青年科学基金等项目支持。
